Community development through health, education, environment and economic development of inner city areas in a large Indonesian city.
We as a multicultural team are focused on a neighborhood in the inner city. Our vision is to see numerous people growing in their knowledge of Jesus Christ. We build relationships as we serve among these people, showing Jesus' love in word and deed.
Our vision is for movements of indigenous, transformed and transforming communities among the urban poor and neglected.
You will serve to bless and empower urban poor communities in the inner city, to walk with the poor, and to communicate Jesus' message in ways they will understand. You will be part of a team working to meet practical needs, seek sustainable solutions for poverty and provide a knowledge of Christ in the communities we serve.
The city in which we live has all the conveniences of a modern international city, but also the challenges of a developing, tropical urban centre including heat, traffic and overcrowding. We work in mixed income, high density, inner city areas, where the poorest citizens live in squatter communities beside the railway tracks. Some team members live in nearby areas, while others live closer to the schools their children attend. The large population includes people from many ethnic backgrounds, including a significant number of Muslims, Buddhists and Christians.
- Work with both a cross-cultural and national team to design and deliver community development programs.
- Model a Christ-honoring life and work with the team in bringing the light, love and salt of Jesus to the inner city.
Minimum undergraduate degree in health, development, social services, or business and economics, with experience in such fields a definite asset. Other education and experience may be considered.
The applicant should be prepared to live an appropriate lifestyle within the community in which they will live. Among other things, this relates to dressing modestly, and being sensitive to the dietary restrictions of our neighbors. This is very helpful as it would build bridges with neighbours and friends. It also means contextualizing the language we use to communicate Jesus' message. In the local culture it is important that the men relate to the men and the women relate to the women.
