South Sudan is a country located in East Central Africa which shares a border with six neighbouring countries. It is a young sovereign nation having gained independence in 2011. Since then, it has struggled with nation building and good governance.
The terrain and geographical barriers including the Sudd, one of the worlds largest wetlands, means that those that live there struggle to gain access to some of those services we take for granted. A three-hour flight for one of our partners can save a weeks journey overland in the dry season and a month in the wet season.
We are looking for a Finance Manager on a 1 year short term contract to join the South Sudan team. MAF will provide housing in Juba, travel costs, medical and life insurance, pension contributions and a living allowance.
Your role will be to provide financial management to the South Sudan programme. This will include preparing the annual budget, financial monthly accounts including re-forecasts to the end of the year and provide financial information to the programme manager and other department heads when required.
As the manager you will supervise the finance staff in their duties, providing them with clear feedback, training, development and mentoring. You will oversee the payments of wages and benefits to programme national staff.
You will need to manage the financial risk by maintaining accounting systems and internal controls that comply with the MAFI finance manual. You will develop and improve systems and controls as necessary.
To ensure that the requirement of the regulating authorities are met you will arrange for external audits and filing of accounts. You will prepare and submit any tax returns and forms and assist staff with filing tax information if required.
As part of the programme leadership team you will monitor financial performance and recommend appropriate corrective action and advise on the financial implications of proposals discussed.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience Essential
Qualified Accountant (ACA, CIMA or equivalent) Management of a finance team Managing relationships with auditors, bankers and lawyers Experience in accounting systems and internal control procedures Experience in preparing budgets and accounts The ability to research and assimilate laws and regulations and evaluate their impact
Cross cultural experience Knowledge of reporting requirements of the UK
